Home and Garden Show Niagara Falls Scotiabank Convention Centre April 8th - April 10th 2011
With the best spring weather so far this year, the timing couldn’t have been better for the Greater Niagara Region Home and Garden Show in Niagara Falls. And with this years even being held in the brand new Scotiabank Convention Centre, we thought it would be the best time to check out this popular event.
The 2011 Home and Garden show was offering the large assortment of displays and local retailers that you would find at many home shows along with special guest speakers and demonstrations throughout the weekend of the event.
Among the more than 100 vendors at the show were several renovation, plumbing, roofing, pool and spa, landscaping and fencing contractors as well as various mortgage, food, household and clothing accessory companies.
There were also some unique vendors at the home show including an interesting ball bike that implements a gym style balance ball as the seat while the user pedals the exercise bike.Another interesting item included a larger than life wooden cottage chair on display at a unique vendor that made wooden garden furniture and accessories. At the time we went, we were able to catch a great food demonstration on how to make perfect French toast on the food stage and on the other end of the facility, Tom Silva from This Old House and Ask This Old House fame gave two separate talks about his role on the popular and longest running “how to” show on television, more than 30 years on air and still going strong!
Another popular guest at the show was celebrity chef Anna Olson from The Food Network’s show “Fresh with Anna Olson”. Anna is known as a great pastry chef and demonstrated some of her favourite recipes while talking about her experiences of having her own cooking show.
With the weather being so perfect on the weekend of the show, there were very many people there throughout the day to catch the Home Show. Even so, the new convention center and layout of the show was more than large enough to handle the crowds. Another reason for the large turn out may have been that the show and parking were both free… a plus for any budget minded family looking for something to do.
As we walked the show, picking up pamphlets and the odd freebie here and there we noticed that although most of the vendors were nice looking or even interesting and helpful, the ones that were getting all the attention were the ones that had great demonstrators working for them. These may have been employees for the companies or hired help but for sure, the ones making the most sales that day were the ones with the energetic and active displays. There was an interesting accessory that can turn your hose into a power washer that had a great demonstration while a food related product was hard to even get a spot to see for the crowd was at times so large. Needless to say, both items were selling like mad! A food related product ended up to be an amazing vegetable peeler that even we purchased for the home.
Overall, the Greater Niagara Home and Garden show seemed to be a great success, and the Scotiabank Convention Centre, being located just blocks away from the Falls themselves, is the perfect fit for the City and the Region as a whole. Its definitely worth considering for your next business or entertainment function.
