Last weekend in addition to the Scene Festival, the annual Art in the Park was held at Montebello Park in St.Catharines. I thought I would check it out while in the area. For those people that are not from the area, St.Catharines is just a short 15 minute drive from Niagara Falls on the Q.E.W. As I approached the downtown area the crowds were increasing due to the Scene Festival I thought I would never find parking. To my surprise there was plenty! I parked right off Duke Street which is just a couple minute walk to the park.
Admission was free and the weather was great! Near the entrance of the park I noticed there were multiple art vendors showcasing their originals and prints. I’m an art lover so I spent quite a bit of time here. The vendors were friendly and more than willing to discuss pieces. Just across from the vendors was an area setup for kids to draw and paint. Something I wouldn’t expect in a park setting but it was a great success!
In the Pavilion more pieces from local artists were on display along with a silent auction where all the proceeds went to benefit the St.Catharines Art Association. There were over 50 different items ranging from paintings, prints, sculptures, stained glass art, wine as well as gift certificates to local establishments and art stores such as Curries in Burlington, Ontario. I read the details posted as I had never attended a silent auction before. In front of each item was a sheet outlining a description of the item along with a starting price. People could then bid up the item and at 2:30pm the person with the highest bid for that item would win it. I bid on a few items but was unfortunately outbid!
After the auction I enjoyed a refreshment at one of the two stands that were available and enjoyed the music playing by some local students. As you can see the weather was great!I definitely will attend the Art In The Park Event next year as it a great way to spend an afternoon!
