Winter Festival of Lights 2009 - 2010 Season Has Begun!
Now going into it's 27th season, the annual Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights is starting to light up the imaginations of a second generation of children.
On Saturday, November the 7th the Niagara Parks Commission put on its traditional Pre-Lighting Concert onstage in Queen Victoria Park.
The cool but comfortable weather was inviting and attracted an estimated 6,000 people to the park to see the show.
For many people, attending the opening ceremony is just as much of a tradition as seeing the lights are.
This years performers included holiday songs sung by the Festival of Lights Choir, a magic show put on by world grand champion of magic, Greg Frewin and a small theatrical display by the cast of Oh Canada eh!
Other performances included a surprise visit from Disney’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse along with friend Daisy Duck.
With a simple “flick of the switch” by Mickey and Minnie, all of the more than 120 festival displays along the parkway were lit up at once, creating great applause and cheering from the crowd.
There have been a couple of new additions to the displays this year and most of the originals have had the old incandescent bulbs replaced with new LEDs making this the most energy efficient Festival of Lights to date.
Other show stoppers during the night included the always beautiful Falls Illumination and Fireworks over the Falls displays.
The Illumination, where the Falls are lit up by giant colored spotlights can be seen every night and the Fireworks will be held every Friday evening at 9 pm until January 1st
The events run from November 7, 2009 to January 4 2010.
