Happy Rolph’s Petting Zoo, Regional Bird Sanctuary & 911 Memorial

Located in the City of St. Catharines just 20 minutes outside of Niagara Falls, Happy Rolphs Bird Sanctuary in known to locals as a fun friendly place for the family to visit when looking to get an up close look at various birds, water foul and barn yard animals.

This well manicured 15 acre petting farm is located near the shores of Lake Ontario and is actually a municipal park maintained by the City of St.Catharines.

Happy Ralph’s has many pathways for people to explore while viewing the various animals such as chickens, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and others along with hundreds of different local birds and water foul like ducks and geese located in the large pond area.

Many of the birds at the sanctuary use the large pond, protected by trees, evergreens and wild grass covered water banks, for shelter and can be seen when not migrating south.

Visitors to Happy Rolph’s are able to purchase food pellets to feed the animals and birds, and in most cases the animals will eat right out of their hands.

Many families coming to Happy Rolph’s like to bring a picnic and enjoy the shade and grassy park areas during the visit.

Happy Rolph’s is also known for having one of the most exotic collections of Rhododendrons in the area, a very impressive view when in flower.

911 Memorial Pathway

In recognition of the 27 Canadian citizens that were killed in the September 2001 attacks, at the World Trade Center, a memorial pathway has been created at Happy Rolph’s Bird Sanctuary.

The victims have been remembered with the planting of 27 varieties of deciduous trees along the pathway. Each tree is marked with a plaque dedicated to a specific person and outlines where and when that person was born, how old they were and where they were during the attacks.

There are also several benches placed along the walkway to allow visitors a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery while reflecting back.

When and Where

Located at 2 Northrup Crescent near the end of Reid Rd. in St. Catharines, Happy Rolph’s Bird Sanctuary is close to the Welland Canal.

The farm is free to explore and is open from early spring to mid October and hours of operation are from 7 am to Dusk.
