Our Experience at Hoops Sports Bar & Grill Niagara Falls
With not being in the mood to cook and hunger pangs starting to kick into full gear we decided to visit one of the Falls newest restaurants, Hoops Niagara Falls Sports Bar and Grill.
One of the great things about Niagara Falls is the fact that there are always new and interesting places opening up to be explored by locals and visitors alike. And that makes finding new places to eat that much easier.
Hoops Niagara Falls is a sports themed restaurant and bar located just steps away from the Cineplex Odeon Theatre and Niagara Square Shopping mall. It’s in a brand new building that was originally constructed to be another location of the popular restaurant chain Applejacks but for whatever reason it became a new location of the Hoops Restaurant chain.
This location had only been open for a few days and they hadn’t even thrown their grand opening bash yet so we were expecting a bit of the regular “rough” spots you would expect at any restaurant opening. Things such as not enough servers, lacking full knowledge of the menu, etc, etc. However, for the most part, Hoops seemed to have many of these issues already taken care of and seemed to run like a long operating restaurant… A definite plus.
Upon entry, the first thing anyone would notice besides the dark colors would be the large number of televisions this place has, 150 to be exact, and they are everywhere. There are TV’s running all along the walls, in booths, behind the bar, in the bathrooms and even in the floors! Needless to say, finding the game here would never be a problem.
After being greeted at the door we were given a choice to sit at a table or booth and chose a booth. As we were escorted through the restaurant to our seat it became clear that this was a fairly large place with plenty of seating on several levels. Our booth was in the bar area and was very unique. It was along a wall with several others and was made for only two people. This made it feel very intimate even thought it wasn’t in a corner or out of the way spot.
There was plenty of staff on hand so we received great service throughout the night. The menus are shaped like basketballs which were easy to use but had a really good assortment of items to choose from including an extensive nacho selection.
After some consideration, I finally decided on the Steak Fajitas and Tara chose the Spinach Dip. We spent some time choosing what to have and asked our server several questions about the menu. She was able to answer most questions quickly but there were some things she needed to ask the kitchen, no big deal really since the restaurant had only been open for a few days.
The food came quickly and was very hot, great to see that the kitchen was working well to ensure that both meals were ready at the same time.
Tara and I were both happy with our selections. The Spinach Dip tasted great I was told and was at the perfect temperature to eat as well as being just the right amount to be filling but not to much. I would have to say the same for the Steak Fajitas, they too were served at the perfect temperature, contained just the right amount of Steak to toppings to wraps and were just filling enough.
The only problem with the food I had would be the price. Although Tara’s Spinach Dip was priced perfectly at $9.99. My meal was a whopping $18.99, a good price for a 8 or 10 ounce steak dinner but not for fajitas with no more than 3 or 4 ounces of steak in total.
I was choosing between the Fajitas for $18.99 or Steak Quesadillas at only $9.99 but chose the Fajitas believing that for the price there must be a generous portion… Not so.
One other sore spot during the visit for us is the fact that there are no refills on pop. And at $2.99 per drink that can start to add up on a family out for dinner. Every restaurant has the right to charge for each drink but we think that in a city where some places don’t even charge for pop, a restaurant should maybe consider offering non-stop pop even if it’s at a higher price or charge a lower price for each one.
That being said, we did enjoy our time at Hoops Sports Bar and Grill and will most likely visit there again some time when we are in the area, maybe next time we are catching a movie or shopping at Niagara Square Mall.
