Ice Wines of Niagara

Anyone who appreciates good ice wine knows that Ontario ice wines are quickly becoming the best produced anywhere in the world.

Long known as a world class destination, Niagara wine country has been producing this sweet wine for many years and about 13 of the more

than thirty wineries within the Niagara Region produce ice wine as part of their product line thus becoming one of the best places in the world to obtain this “nectar of the gods”.

The list of wineries that produce ice wine continues to grow as the icewine industry as a whole continues to mature.

Worldwide, the ice wine industry has been so successful that it has had to deal with many growing pains in recent years such as falsely labelled table wine sold as ice wine and counterfeit wines produced using various “unregulated” or even dangerous additives to try and give the wine the unique flavour that icewines are famous for.

The ice wine producers in Ontario have gone out of their way and travelled the world to several countries where the counterfeiting of Niagara Ice Wine has been taking place. They are working with these countries to stop the counterfeiting by holding summits and showcasing the various ice wines to demonstrate what the true product should taste.

Back in Niagara though, the wines are appreciated to their fullest extent every year with all producing wineries participating in the Ice Wine Festival held every January.

The Ice Wine Festival which usually kicks off in the Falls and carries over into many of the surrounding cities and towns and always guarantees a great time with ice wine being served in glasses made of ice and served at bars also made of ice.

The wineries involved in producing icewine are all within a short drive of the City of Niagara Falls and are well worth the visit to anyone traveling to the area, especially during the ice wine festival in January to take advantage of the events and tours.

Some local ice wine producers:

  • Coyote’s Run Estate Winery - Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • Jackson Trigs - Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • Konzelman Estate Winery - Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • Magnotta Winery - Beamsville
  • Palatine Hills Estate Winery - Niagara on the Lake
  • Pillitteri Estates Winery - Niagara on the Lake
