Imax Movie Theatres: Experience One Of The Largest Cinema Screens In The World When Visiting Niagara Falls

There is a lot to see when someone visits Niagara Falls. There are many attractions like the Maid of the Mist or the SkyWheel. There are the many different parks and nature getaways and of course there is the Niagara River and the Falls themselves.

All these things are great and must be experienced when here but something else that is a must see when in the city is a movie at the Imax Theatre!

What is an Imax Movie?

Like the blockbusters we watch at the local cinema, Imax films are major productions written, directed and filmed for everyone to enjoy but with several major differences.

The name Imax for one thing stands for Image Maximum which should give you an idea of where we are going with this type of film.

Imax movies are filmed on much larger film stock than traditional movies, in fact, at 70mm, the Imax film is a full 10 times larger than a regular film.

This larger capacity means more information can be stored on the film and therefore a much clearer and more detailed movie is the result.

Another trademark of the Imax film technology, which was created by the IMAX Corporation in Canada by the way, is it’s use of very large screens to display the movies. These Screens can be as tall as 6 stories.

The use of these screens is possible because of the better detail in the larger film and therefore any traditional film displayed at the same resolution as an Imax would appear very blurry.

One drawback to Imax film is that because it is so large that the camera itself needs to be very large to handle the big format.

This makes getting to locations and filming with Imax more challenging but anyone who watched an Imax film would agree that the extra effort is worth it.

Imax Niagara Falls

Located next to the Skylon Tower, the Niagara Falls Imax Theatre is showcased inside a very unique building in and of itself.A large pyramid shaped structure, the Imax Theatre has several attractions to offer visitors.

First of the film currently playing on the screen is "The Falls: Legends and Dare Devils” This movie takes you back to a time when going over the falls in a barrel or crossing over the Gorge seemed to be a smart thing to do.

The theatre itself is a 60 foot tall, 620 stadium seating auditorium with over 12,000 watts of digital sound coming from the surround sound speaker system.
