Tour the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve - A Gorge Carved Out By Niagara Falls
You could say that the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve and walking paths have been a work in progress since long before man ever came on the scene in the area.
The geological history of Niagara Falls dates back thousands of years where, as time went on, they have worked their way back from Lake Ontario, along the Niagara River to where they are today and are still slowly carving their way toward Lake Erie by a couple of inches per year.
In the wake of this turbulent and sometimes violent past, Niagara Falls has left a deep canyon carved out in the rocky terrain of the Escarpment called the Niagara Gorge. It is in this Great Gorge that visitors to the area will find the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve.
Observe hundreds of species of plants and animals while venturing through over 4km (2.5 miles of maintained pathways.
Explore natures wonder as you pass boulders the size of houses and untouched Carolinian Forests with a large assortment of plants and trees. All these wonderful things to see while only footsteps away from the edge of the Whirlpool, another of the Niagara Rivers famous landmarks.
Since a hike through the Niagara Glen involves walking through paths that follow the natural flows of the river’s past you will experience elevations changes of up to 60 meters or 200 feet. It is for this reason that Niagara Parks advises visitors wear appropriate clothing and shoes capable of the hiking terrain.
Located just 8kms North or down river of the Falls, the Niagara Glen can be found across from Whirlpool Golf Course and is free to visit and explore all year round, although it is weather permitting in the winter time.
Niagara Parks reminds visitors that since the Glen is a Nature reserve so please, only take pictures and leave only footprints!
