Located just ten minutes North of the Falls, the Butterfly Conservatory Niagara fits perfectly in amongst its surroundings of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture.
The Butterfly Conservatory Niagara opened its doors to visitors of Niagara Falls in December of 1996 and was constructed at a cost of about $15 million.
The main focal point of the conservatory is its 3,000 square foot glass dome that covers a large portion of the visitor area and allows the free flight of the butterflies.
Much of the Butterfly Conservatory Niagara consists of tropical plants and trees, waterfalls, a pond and many paths running in various different directions for visitors to explore and discover the many interesting and colourful butterflies, more than 2000 at any given time of the year.
Within the Conservatory there is also a museum of butterflies, a small 200 seat theatre for various demonstrations and short movies explaining the life cycles and other facts about butterflies.
The inner workings of the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory is very interesting. The building itself where the butterflies are free to fly around and even land on the visitors is strictly kept at 26.6 degrees Celsius and its humidity level is maintained at a wet 88%. This ensures that the environment is absolutely perfect for the butterflies to live a full life, a life which can be anywhere from as short as 2 weeks and can go up to 6 months depending on the variety.
With such varying life spans, the conservatory constantly keeps the population of butterflies up by both importing different species from butterfly farms around the world and by breeding many in the conservatory where the final stages maturation can be seen in the “Emergence window” as the butterfly leaves it pupae and begins to take on the adult looks of the butterfly.
With so many butterflies flying free inside the conservatory it is necessary to replace many of the flowering plants (butterflies feed on the nectar created within a flower) every 3 to 4 weeks in order to maintain a continues food source.
The Butterfly Conservatory is a world class attraction, offering an educational experience of the delicate world of butterflies while enjoying a tropical get away surrounded by some of natures most wonderful creations.
